RC Transfer Online on Parivahan + How to Check Status
When a car is sold, the RC (Registration Certificate) must be transferred to the new owner. Most of this now happens online through the Parivahan portal. This guide walks the process step by step, plus how to check your RC transfer status.

Before you start: what you need
- Original RC, valid insurance and PUC
- Form 29 and Form 30
- Sale proof (your car invoice)
- ID and address proof of buyer and seller
- NOC if the car had a loan or is moving to another state (Form 28)

RC transfer online, step by step
- Open the Parivahan portal and select your state.
- Go to Online Services → Vehicle Related Services.
- Enter the registration number and the last digits of the chassis number, then verify with the OTP sent to the registered mobile.
- Select Transfer of Ownership.
- Fill the seller name (as per RC), the buyer name, address and ID details, and the sale date.
- Upload the scanned documents.
- Pay the fee online (UPI, card or net banking).
- Book an appointment if your state requires in-person or biometric verification, and carry the originals to the RTO.
How to check RC transfer status
- Return to the Parivahan portal.
- Use Know Your Vehicle Details or the application status option.
- Enter your registration number or the application reference number.
- The portal shows the current stage, from submitted to approved.
The transfer is complete only when the updated RC shows the buyer's name.

Don't forget the seller's side
The seller should also file Form 29 as notice of transfer and keep proof. Until the RTO updates the buyer's name, the car stays the seller's liability.
