Check Car Owner by Number | Bill My Car

Before buying a used car, or just to verify a vehicle, you can check the owner and RC details from the number plate. India's official VAHAN system makes this quick and free. Here is how, and what you can and cannot see.

The official ways to check

1. VAHAN portal

Open the Parivahan VAHAN e-services page, choose Know Your Vehicle Details, enter the registration number, and view a partially masked owner name plus registration date, fuel type, vehicle class, and the validity of the RC, insurance and PUC.

2. mParivahan app

Install mParivahan, log in with your mobile and OTP, open the RC tab, and enter the full registration number (for example DL01XX0000). It shows owner name (often masked), RTO, vehicle class and make/model, and insurance and PUC status.

3. SMS

In many states you can text VAHAN [registration number] to the official number to get basic details.

What you can see

Why it matters when buying

After you buy: transfer it properly

Checking details is only step one. Once you buy, complete the ownership transfer so the RC reflects your name, otherwise the car stays in the seller's name. See how to transfer car ownership, the RC transfer on Parivahan, and the documents you need.

For dealers

If you sell pre-owned cars, give every buyer a clean set of documents: a car invoice, a sale letter, and Form 29 and Form 30. Bill My Car generates them from one entry, so the handover is fast and the buyer's transfer goes through without a hitch.

Selling a car? Do the paperwork right

Bill My Car turns one invoice into GST & non-GST bills, sale letters, Form 29, Form 30 and delivery notes, auto-filled and ready to download. Built for Indian used-car dealers.
