Automobile Bill of Sale in India: Format for Cars, Bikes and Commercial Vehicles
"Automobile bill of sale" is the international name for what Indian practice calls a sale letter or vehicle sale document. Whatever the label, the job is the same: a signed record that this vehicle, identified precisely, changed hands on this date, for this amount. Here is the India-correct version, for cars, bikes and commercial vehicles.

What it must contain
- Parties: seller and buyer, full names and addresses as per ID.
- Vehicle identity: registration number, make and model, chassis number, engine number. For commercial vehicles, add the permit and fitness certificate references.
- Consideration: the price in figures and words, how it was paid, and any balance.
- Date and time of sale: the moment liability shifts; be precise.
- Condition: the as-is clause, stating the buyer inspected and accepted the vehicle.
- Signatures: both parties, ideally two witnesses.
The field-by-field reasoning lives in our used car bill of sale template; the India-specific legal context in bill of sale for a car in India.
Car vs bike vs commercial vehicle
- Car: the standard format above; owner serial from the RC is worth recording.
- Two-wheeler: identical structure; the same Form 29/30 transfer applies, with lower RTO fees.
- Commercial vehicle: add permit number, fitness validity and tax-paid status to the identity block; buyers of commercial stock inherit compliance gaps otherwise.
What it cannot do
An automobile bill of sale does not move the RC. Until Form 29 and Form 30 are filed and processed, the RTO still considers the seller the owner, with everything that implies for challans and liability. Treat the bill of sale as one document in a set: invoice, bill of sale, delivery note, transfer forms.
Bill My Car generates that entire set from one entry, for used and new vehicle dealerships, with every PDF auto-saved to your own Google Drive.

Is an automobile bill of sale the same for a car, bike and truck?
The structure is identical: parties, vehicle identity, price, condition, delivery and signatures. What changes is the identity block (two-wheelers have no separate variant lines, commercial vehicles add permit and fitness references) and the supporting RTO forms filed with it.
Does a bill of sale transfer ownership of an automobile?
No. It records the transaction between seller and buyer. Ownership in the RTO's records changes only through Form 29 and Form 30. The bill of sale is evidence; the forms are the transfer.
Is a notarised automobile bill of sale required in India?
No law requires notarisation for a standard vehicle sale. Plain paper or letterhead with both signatures and ideally two witnesses is standard practice. Some parties notarise high-value sales for comfort, but it is optional.
What is the difference between an automobile bill of sale and an invoice?
The invoice is the financial record with pricing and tax detail; the bill of sale narrates the transfer, its date and time, and the as-is condition. Dealers issue both from the same sale data.
