What goes into a car delivery note
A car delivery note, also called a delivery challan, is the document that proves a buyer actually took possession of a vehicle, on a specific date, with its keys and papers. It is separate from the invoice: the invoice bills the price, the delivery note confirms the handover. Car dealers and private sellers both use it to draw a clear line for when responsibility, including post-sale traffic challans, passes to the buyer. The same format works for any state RTO in India.
A complete delivery note covers four things:
- Vehicle details. Registration number, make and model, chassis and engine numbers, odometer reading at handover.
- Seller and buyer details. Names, addresses, and the buyer's phone number.
- What was handed over. RC, insurance certificate, PUC certificate, service booklet, tool kit, and the number of key sets.
