A car bill is the document you hand over on every sale: it records the vehicle, the buyer and the amount paid. Whether you call it a car bill, a car invoice or a cash memo, the format is what matters. Get it right and the rest of the paperwork follows cleanly.

This guide shows the correct car bill format for India, with a free template you can copy.

What a car bill must include

A clean car bill has four blocks:

Seller details

Buyer details

Vehicle details

Sale details

Always capture the chassis and engine numbers. They carry straight into Form 29 and Form 30 for the RTO transfer, so recording them on the bill saves you retyping later.

GST bill vs cash bill

There are two versions of a car bill:

GST bill Cash bill / memo
Who issues GST-registered dealer Private seller or unregistered dealer
Tax shown CGST + SGST on the margin No tax rows
Also called Tax invoice Bill of sale, cash memo

Most registered dealers bill under the GST margin scheme, where tax applies only to the profit margin. See GST on used cars and the car invoice format for the exact layout.

How to make a car bill online

Hand-writing every bill is slow and the details never carry into your other documents. The faster way:

  1. Enter the buyer and vehicle once.
  2. Pick GST or non-GST.
  3. Download a clean, print-ready A4 bill.

The same details then flow into your sale letter and RTO forms, so you never type them twice.

Common mistakes to avoid

A car bill takes one minute when the details fill themselves. That is exactly what Bill My Car is built for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a car bill?

Add the seller, buyer, vehicle and price details, then download a print-ready bill. With Bill My Car you enter the deal once and the car bill, sale letter and RTO forms all fill from the same data.

Is a car bill the same as a car invoice?

In everyday use, yes. Both show the vehicle, the buyer and the sale amount. A GST invoice additionally shows the tax breakup (CGST and SGST). A plain car bill or cash memo has no tax rows.

Is a car bill compulsory?

A bill is your proof that the vehicle changed hands, for what amount and on what date. It protects buyer and seller and supports the RTO ownership transfer, so you should always issue one.
