How Long Is a Car RC Valid in India? Renewal Limits and What Happens After Expiry
"How long is my RC valid" and "how many times can I renew it" are two different questions, and dealers buying older stock need clear answers to both before they price a car. Here they are, in plain terms.
The basic validity period
A private (non-transport) vehicle, car or two-wheeler, gets a registration certificate valid for 15 years from the date of first registration. This is fixed by the Motor Vehicles Act and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, and applies uniformly across states.
Renewal: how many times, and for how long each time
After the initial 15 years, the RC does not expire permanently. It renews in blocks of 5 years, and there is no statutory limit on how many times a vehicle can go through this cycle, as long as it keeps passing the checks at each renewal (valid insurance, PUC, and in most states no outstanding dues). A vehicle can, in principle, be renewed indefinitely.
What actually ends a vehicle's road life sooner is usually not the renewal count but:
- Fitness failure: a vehicle that cannot pass the RTO's condition check at renewal
- Regional age bans: pollution-driven restrictions like Delhi-NCR's ban on diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years, which apply regardless of a technically valid RC
- Practical roadworthiness: most owners retire a vehicle for cost or safety reasons well before renewal limits would matter

What happens if you let it lapse
An expired RC is not just paperwork risk, it is a legal one: driving on it is an offence with fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, and the vehicle cannot be transferred or resold cleanly until renewed. Renewing after expiry typically costs more, since late fees accrue per month of delay.
